Cafélix And The Special Mugby Sarit Goffen | 12.08.15
Located in the charming Sgula square in Jaffa, Cafélix is a coffee and roasting house which immediately takes you to an overseas experience. The smells, the atmosphere and the inner peace of the owners – Yael and Phillip, turn this place into a real gem.
Philip Scheffer was born in Germany, made ‘Aliya’ and converted to Judaism. Together with his wife Yael, they established Cafélix – the name is a hint to Phillips nickname – Felix. Although a lawyer by training, Philip turned to learn the art of roasting during his time in Israel and looked for the coffee of his dreams. When he couldn’t find it, he decided to open his own roasting house that would supply coffee to other coffee shops and cafes. That didn’t work. The local market was not interested, but luckily the neighbors were. Philip’s roasting house started to serve coffee and quickly became a café that now has a few branches in Tel Aviv and a shop in Jerusalem.
Cafélix is home to coffee from Ethiopia, Brazil, Indonesia and other countries, all carefully selected by Philip and his partner – coffee expert Ofir Ben-Haroush. Together they create different blends which are also offered in a less conventional ways like paper filter and French press and not just as cappuccino or espresso.
At Cafélix each customer is asked for his favorite coffee flavor and a blend is mixed according to different types or mixtures. Another unique gesture is saved especially for the customers of the Sgula square branch: The mug cabinet. The idea came from Europe where there is a tradition of honoring regular customers with their own mugs. The cabinet holds personal coffee mugs – “The neighbor cups” as they are called here. Each mug has the customer’s name on it and when a customer arrives he or she can take their mug and have their coffee prepared in it. Only returning customers who arrive at least 5 times a week get to have their own mug in the cabinet + a 33% discount.
